Founded in 1822, Athens State University is an upper level university offering thirty three majors to junior and senior undergraduates. Originally dubbed the Athens Female Academy, the name was changed to the Athens Female Institute when the Methodist Church took over in 1942. The opening of the school to men in 1931 necessitated a change to the simple Athens College.
In 1974 the school became a part of the state system, as Athens State College, finally becoming Athens State University in 1998.
